About Us

In 1855 William Loving Fanning shot and killed a buck while on a hunting expedition, the horns were mounted in a nearby tavern and the surrounding community grew to be known as Buckhorn. In 1958, as a result of the consolidation of New Market and Riverton High School, Buckhorn High School was opened, displaying the original horns of the community as a gift from the Fanning family.

In 2006 Buckhorn became the second school in Alabama to be selected to host a Gilder Lehrman History High School Program.  Since the inception of the program, Buckhorn has grown from one G/L class to four elective history course options.  Buckhorn now offers Founding Fathers, Civil War, Pre Advanced Placement/Advanced Placement, and Great Wars.  Buckhorn is excited about offering its students more opportunities to enrich their academic journey through high school.

The Buckhorn Historical Society is an outreach of the Gilder Lehrman program in that, it offers students who are not enrolled in specific Gilder Lehrman classes the opportunity to continue learning about history.  Society members are afforded the same opportunities to attend guest lectures, field trips, and roundtables.  Many of the students who are currently members of the Society have taken multiple Gilder Lehrman classes while enrolled at Buckhorn.
